Lettering Policy

The Woodlands College Park High School Band is a co-curricular activity. Not only do you receive an academic grade, but you also receive the benefits of an extra-curricular organization. The grade reflects what you do in class, but hours spent outside of the classroom are awarded with a Varsity Band Letter.

A Varsity Band Letter is given after a student’s sophomore year upon completion of the requirements outlined below. Freshman and Sophomore students can be eligible for a Varsity Letter only if they make Region Band or Region Orchestra. To receive a letter, you must complete ONE of the following:

  • Category A plus 3 items from category B
  • Category A plus 1 item from category B and 3 items from category C
  • Category A plus 7 items from category C

Category A

  • No unexcused absences from band performances, rehearsals, sectionals, or contests

Category B

  • Selection and participation as a member of the All-Region Band or Orchestra this includes freshman Region Band)
  • Advancement to the Area audition
  • Selection as a member of the Texas All-State Band or Orchestra
  • Receiving a superior rating on a class I solo at UIL Solo & Ensemble competition
  • Qualification to the UIL State Solo & Ensemble contest

Category C

  • Participation in the All-Region Band audition (not applicable if a member of All-Region Band or Orchestra)
  • Selection to the District Band (not applicable if a member of All-Region Band or Orchestra)
  • Memorization of all required marching music
  • Participation in the TWCP musical pit orchestra
  • Participation in the TWCP full orchestra
  • Participation in the TWCP jazz band
  • Receiving an superior rating on a solo or ensemble at UlL Solo & Ensemble competition (class I or II selection)
  • Participation in all band trips
  • 2 semesters of consistent private instruction of your instrument
  • Service as a member of student leadership
  • Accumulation of 10+ service hours to TWCP Band
  • 3 consecutive years in band

Note: The accumulation of 2 items from Category D will change the requirements for lettering. An additional item from Category B or additional items from Category C will be necessary to obtain a varsity band letter.

Category D

  • Improper concert attire
  • Improper care of equipment
  • Improper care of uniform
  • Lack of required materials and equipment for all performances, rehearsals, sectionals, or contests
  • Unfulfilled officer duties
  • Tardy to a performance, rehearsal, sectional, or contest
  • Inappropriate behavior while representing the TWCP band
  • Unexcused absence from a performances, rehearsals, sectionals, or contests
