Following a successful audition, students are placed into the color guard class that corresponds to their grade.

Auditions are usually before Thanksgiving with results being posted before leaving for the break. Depending on the directors discretion there are one or two color guards in the winter season. Anyone can audition for the winterguard, and placements into the Junior Varsity and Varsity guard will depend on how auditions go. Each year the number of people in the Varsity guard will be up to the director and what they are planning on doing with the show.

Wind Ensemble & Symphonic Band members (and others selected by Directors) audition. Those successful at phase 1 go through to phase 2 auditions. Those successful at Phase 2 go to the clinic and concert, and area auditions. Those who qualify at area are known as "All state musicians" and attend the TMEA clinic/convention.

Placement auditions occur in April and determine student placement for the following semester (this includes current 8th graders/incoming 9th graders). Percussion students audition again late fall for their Concert Season placement. Other Band students will have their performance assessed in December mid-terms, and on occasion, some students placements may change. Schedules will be altered accordingly, following any placement changes. Students can move up or down, depending on their audition. Students will be placed into one of the following bands;

  • Wind Ensemble II, III, IV (UIL = Varsity)
    • students required to participate in a 90 minute sectional once a week which takes places outside of the school day
  • Symphonic I, II, III, IV (UIL = Non-Varsity)
    • students required to participate in a 90 minute sectional once a week which takes places outside of the school day
  • Concert Band I, II, III, IV (UIL = Sub Non-Varsity)

All freshmen band students are eligible to audition, but must ultimately be approved by Directors before auditioning.

Those successful at audition will attend a clinic and concert.

All band members perform and help run this event which is a key opportunity to learn a piece of music to an in-depth level, and receive productive critique from an independent source. This is mandatory for all students with private lesson teachers and all other students are invited to participate. Music will be assigned to students by Directors and students must use an approved accompanist ($). Students are expected to practice and be well prepared.
