Competitions

Competitions are when the students get to show off all their hard work. It’s thrilling to see everything come together in a competitive environment. They can be very long days, with early starts (3am/4am at CP is not uncommon). It just depends on venue and the time slot we’re given – which isn’t known until closer to the time. (And yes, they sometimes follow on the day after a game day).

Clear bags with maximum dimensions are often needed at bigger venues. (This isn’t always relevant to students if they’re in and out just to perform, but is usually relevant for spectators).

It is normally better to bring cash for parking , admission (if not purchased in advance) and refreshments.

Some venues are warm and some are cold – so bring various layers!

Not only do we host this event locally, full band and guard perform our contest show for this, our first competition and BOA experience of the season. There is a prelims round where all entrants compete and the top bands compete in a finals round later on that same day.

Grading

"The Bands of America adjudication system is a criteria reference system, in which a band showing proficiency in particular criteria, or meeting certain criteria at a certain level, falls within a scoring range. It is the position of Bands of America that music is the more important aspect of the performance, with marching as the presentation and visual enhancement of the program. Similarly, more emphasis has been placed on the effectiveness of the general effect judges than on fine-line perfection of the performance judges. The weight of the numbers places 60% of the value on music and 40% on visual, as well as 60% on general effect and 40% on performance. Each judge is assigned a specific area on which he or she focuses, ensemble and general effect judges are located at a vantage point from above (i.e. press box), individual performance judges are located on the field."
